Husband Fred, age 47, and I, age 36, drove our fairly new 1991 Toyota Corolla. From Safford Arizona, to Pennsylvania and New York State to visit family.
Left at 3:38 pm on Thursday May 16, 1991 and it was 90 degrees F. (I had worked almost all day.)
Got my last view of our Mt Graham at 4:47 at Mule Creek Pass. 54 miles.
Crossed New Mexico State Line at 4:58. 60 miles. 1 hour 10 minutes. (long because it was mountain driving)
Continental Divide at 7100 feet. Near Aragon NM. Route 12. 157 miles. 2 hours 52 minutes.
Gas in Albuquerque NM at Unocal, 8.2 gals at $1.059/gallon.
Stopped at rest area with no services just east of Santa Fe at 11:44 PM. 438 miles. 8 hours 6 minutes.
May 17, 1991. Friday
Woke up at 3:30 AM - sleeping in seat of car - freezing cold, so drove 50 miles further east on Interstate 10 to a real rest area. Took a nap until sunrise. Drove on.
Gas at Total Petroleum Vickers at 3115 Sinton Rd Colorado Springs (9 gallons at $1.09/gallon) and we drove through Denver at noon and passed Mile High Stadium so we saw where the Denver Broncos play.
Kearny, Nebraska at 8:05 PM Texaco gas was $1.29/gallon but had gone 420 miles on a tank of gas. (downhill...)
Stopped at rest area between Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska on Interstate 80. Slept 4 hours.
May 18, 1991 Saturday
We woke up at 3:30 AM and drove another hour to just over the state line in Iowa and slept there 2 hours. Weather misty. We heated up water for coffee with a can of Sterno in my lap because it was too cold, misty, rain/fog outside.
Fred drove over the Mississippi River at 11:45 AM at Davenport Iowa into Illinois. There was heavy overcast.
In Gary, Indiana for gas at $1.14/gallon.
Sunset was viewed in Toledo, Ohio (Interstate 80/90)
Bought gas at Sohio station in Willoughby, Ohio $1.229/gallon. (That's $1.23 in any other world...)
Stopped at rest area just north of Cleveland, Ohio at 11 PM to sleep.
May 19, 1991 Sunday
Woke up at 6 AM and on to Niagara Falls!
Sunshine at last in Niagara Falls NY 7:30 AM , 2183 miles.
Arrived Chili, NY at my sister's house at 3:30 PM, 2459 miles. 72 hours on the road, two drivers.
We visited family in the Rochester area. I saw my mother for the last time at the rest home (she would die just under 2 years later.) Then we went to the southern tier of NY and visited my husband's sister and to northern tier of Pennsylvania to visit his brother.
May 30, 1991 Thursday
Left Owego NY at 12:15 on a Thursday. Took Interstate 90 to I-71 to Columbus OH.
Bought gas $1.179 in Medina OH 7:37 PM
May 31, 1991, Friday
Interstate 70 west of Columbia, Missouri, gas at Nelson MO $1.149/gallon at Phillips 66.
Interstate 70 west of Salina, Kansas, gas at convenience store in Russell KS at $1.17/gallon.
June 1, 1991 Saturday
Over the pass at Colorado/New Mexico line at Raton, New Mexico on Interstate 25 at 10:24 AM at 566 miles from home.
Albuquerque at 2 PM.
Gas in Los Lunas, NM (south of ALBQ) at $1.119/gallon.
Arrive home at 7:30 PM, 5295 miles. Nice trip.
